screw dieting. just make healthier choices.

My obsession right now is healthy eating and fitness. As a lifelong vegetarian, growing up with a natural-path father, I had no idea that most people’s households do not contain tofu, carrot juice, pro-biotics and organic apple juice. I had a reality check when in college when I moved onto campus, where my roommates had “I Can’t Believe its Not Butter” instead of Green Earth vegetable “buttery” spread. This is where I began to make unhealthy eating choices.

These years are what I call, the years of the fat-ass. Donuts or bagels for breakfast, pizza or a carb filled cheese sandwiches for lunch, M&Ms here and there, sugar filled juices and lets not forget the late nights studying with 2am pizza orders. Needless to say, I must’ve gained about 15 lbs in 2 years. Let’s not forget the bored Saturday mornings, where I would make a pan of (egg-less) brownies and eat the entire pan (ugh).

Since graduating last May, I have tried to turn my lifestyle around into a healthier one. Granted, it was a lot easier for me than it is for most people, as I already know what is healthy and what isn’t thanks to my parents. Here are some conscious eating decisions I made, which I still struggle to keep up with:

1.Drink Water. Forget the 6-8 or however many glasses of water we keep hearing we’re supposed to consume every day. Depending upon your fitness level and your metabolism, etc, the amount of water you need varies. Here’s a tip: your pee should be clear for a majority of the day. The only time your pee should be remotely yellow is in the morning since you’re not actively consuming water during sleep. No, I do not always pee clear, but I try. It is on most days. For me this is almost about 60 oz of water. Just by doing this, you will lose weight and see a huge improvement in your skin and hair.

2.Consume at least ONE item from every food group, everyday. This includes a vegetable (preferably raw), fruits (lay off bananas and grapes), protein (yogurt, cottage cheese), etc. Cut back on sugars, oils and saturated fats.

3.Stop eating ANYTHING at all at 8pm. This works very well. If you’re hungry, sip some hot tea.

Just by following these tips, from my experience, you will begin to see healthy changes in your body. I’m sure everyone knows to avoid red meat, fried foods, etc. But I write assuming everyone knows that I do not consume meat, fish, poultry or eggs.

With all that said, welcome to my blog! I’ll be discussing new topics everyday...sometimes numerous times a day!
